Hanukkah or Chanukah, meaning “dedication” in Hebrew, commemorates the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C., when the Israelites drove their oppressors out of the city, cleansed the temple, rebuilt its altar, and lit the temple menorah – the ancient holy candelabrum with its seven golden branches symbolizing the creation in seven days, meant to be kept burning every night.
